About the artist -- Mark Hicks is Cherokee/Irish. After traveling for over 10 years across the USA and parts of Canada performing at Native gatherings, Mark moved from his home in Cherokee North Carolina to Albuquerque New Mexico in 1998 where he worked for Sound of America Records (S.O.A.R.), the largest Native American record company in the country.
Mark returned to Cherokee in 2005. At the request of the tribal parks department his music is featured on the Oconaluftee Island Park's "Talking Trees" information posts, located at several points within the island park.

My name is Kathy Britt. I work with alligators in south Florida. When my son, William, was 3 years old he was bitten by an alligator across his stomach. The doctors told me he would be in the Intensive Care ward for at least 6 weeks. A Native American friend of mine from Cherokee North Carolina gave me a flute music CD called “Moon Rise” by Mark Hicks, also from Cherokee. He instructed me to play this music for my son every night. I followed his instructions and to the amazement of the hospital staff my son recovered a full 3 weeks early! The hospital staff was so impressed they asked if I would donate the CD so they could play it for the rest of the children in the ICU ward. I agreed. I then made every attempt to locate Mark to thank him and to get another CD. I was unable to find him because he travelled a great deal performing at Native Pow Wows across the country.

Two years past. Then one day I saw a man setting up a vending booth to sell Native crafts on a tourist island in the Everglades which I managed. I noticed him setting out Cds so I went to investigate. To my surprise it was Mark! I began to cry and told him the story. I was amazed! I searched for 2 years for this man and one day he just walks on to my island! We have been friends ever since. Mark also taught me how to play “Amazing Grace” on my flute. My son, to this day, goes to sleep listening to Mark’s music.

I highly recommend Mark's music to anyone in need of physical or spiritual healing. It is also excellent for meditation.

Sincerely,

Kathy Britt

Henry Lambert
(1935 - 2007)

In November 2007 Henry Lambert, "Chief Henry",  made the journey to the other side. For over 58 years children of ALL ages took great delight in visiting Henry and having their picture taken with him. Three generations have known this icon of Cherokee NC and many traveled here each year to have their picture taken, renew their friendship, visit and to just say "Hello"!

A great man and a good friend. A loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.

There are no words for "good bye" in the Cherokee language, we just say: "Until we meet again".

To my friend I say: I will miss you.
                                                                     Mark
